Petition for an Inquiry into Sexual and other Abuse at Specialist Music Schools – The List of Signatories

Petition re-opened until May 31st – please click here.

As of Sunday February 24th, 2013, the list below details signatories to the petition calling for an inquiry into sexual and other abuse at Chetham’s School of Music and other specialist music institutions. If you would like your name to be added to this, please either leave a message below or e-mail me at ian@ianpace.com and I will include it. If you studied at any such institution, please give details and dates, and otherwise please say how you would like to be described. The petition has been published by The Guardian (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/feb/19/call-inquiry-sex-abuse-allegations ), and I will after this weekend send it to a variety of politicians, heads of institutions, and so on.

In recent weeks, the ongoing allegations of historical sexual abuse at Chetham’s School of Music have put many aspects of music education under intense public scrutiny. Following the conviction of the former director of music, Michael Brewer, the tragic death of Frances Andrade, and extensive testimonies in the press of other abuse, it is clear that there should now be a full independent inquiry into the alleged sexual and psychological abuse by Chetham’s staff since the establishment of the institution as a music school in 1969. Such an inquiry would ideally extend to other institutions as well, some of which have also been the subject of allegations of abuse.

Recent press reports have suggested that during this time many students complained to senior members of staff about the sexually abusive behaviour of a number of Chetham’s teachers, but that no satisfactory action was taken. While it is of primary concern that those who stand accused should be investigated as soon as possible, if these allegations are shown to be correct it will be important to understand the wider implications of a school culture which facilitated such abuses of trust, and afforded alleged offenders long-term protection. For this reason, we ask senior members of staff from that time to account for what appears to be the severe failure of the school system to protect its pupils from those who exploited their positions of power. The prevalence of sexual abuse which appears to have continued unhindered over many years suggests an alarming lack of responsibility and competence in the management of a school which had, above all, a duty to protect the welfare of its students and to nurture the artistic potential of every pupil. That Chetham’s appears to have failed in this respect, and with such devastating consequences for the personal and professional lives of the alleged victims, now requires some considerable explanation from those who held senior positions of authority.

Greater Manchester Police are conducting an investigation into a variety of complaints of sexual abuse related to Chetham’s School of Music and a dedicated Operation called “Kiso” has been established to support this. As an organisation, we recognise that reporting sexual abuse, which occurred some time ago is an incredibly difficult thing to do and we will afford anyone who comes forward, all the appropriate support to discuss events in their own time. We would urge anyone who wishes to report abuse or with information, to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 6777 or via email, op.kiso@gmp.police.uk. Alternatively, persons who wish to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 .

  12. ianpace says:

The petition is now closed – MANY thanks to all of you for your support. I will be sending it this week to the heads of all specialist music institutions and colleges and also to a variety of MPs and others, and will continue to post on this blog about further progress and more generally about the ongoing story. There are over 1000 signatories, and over 300 people who were former students or teachers at Chet’s – a sign of the strength of feeling involved.

    • Many thanks. I started the RCM sept 1987 and was given [redacted] as my 2nd study piano teacher. People told me to wear jeans or trousers to his lessons as he was known to get down and “teach” peddling to girls with skirts on. Within a few lessons he was rubbing my back and touching my leg and so I went immediately and reported him. It shocked me that the powers that be simply swapped me to another piano teacher and nothing more was done about it. I found out yesterday that in 1995 [redacted] was charged with sex offences.

  13. Very many thanks, Ian, for all that you’ve done and are continuing to do about this distressing but important subject; I’m sure that we’ll all look forward to further progress reports as and when.

  14. Natalie Langford says:

Something needs to be done at Chethams. The same teachers that bullied and excluded children are still there. This includes the headteacher and the director of music. I was clinically depressed and they made my life really difficult for me. They seemed incapable of empathy, including the houseparents. Natalie Langford (Pupil at Chethams 1998-2004)

    • I am very sorry to hear of your own plight and I hope that you can bring yourself to feel that the police inquiry now under way and the public inquiry for which Ian Pace and others are calling will help to bring the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth into the public arena for the ultimate benefit and in the best interests of those who have witnessed, heard about and suffered abuse and the school itself; what we all surely desire is progress (as the very name of this blog implies) – in this instance the kind of progress that leads to due and comprehensive revelations, admissions and redress (as far as any redress can be possible and including all information about cover-ups) and a structure and set of guidelines and procedures, together with reliable assurance of adherence to them, for the future.

That such an eventual outcome could be achieved in memory of Frances Andrade and her family would, of course, be a very large added bonus and mean that all of her suffering and that of her family proves ultimately not to have been entirely in vain.

    • Anon says:

The worst part is that I saw the allegations of abuse and actually wasn’t surprised but felt glad that the spotlight was finally being shone on them. There was definitely a lack of empathy, care and support and a really oppressive atmosphere. I also suffered from a mental health problem and living in that environment made me so much worse – I became suicidal and was desperately looking for support but I was made to feel like I was a problem. I also know that students were gossiped about by one of the houseparents in the staff room, who regularly spread personal confidential details and made fun of them to the extent that some other members of staff had to leave the room in protest. The same individual also told me she would kill herself if she had acne, which I had. I’m sorry to hear about your experience, Natalie. I really do empathise – I think we aren’t the only two who went through something like this – and I hope you’re OK now.

      • Natassa Varka says:

Natalie and anon you are both right something also needs to be done about the current lack of pastoral care. In my experience it mainly rests with just a small number of the staff but what they do has a massive impact on the lives of everyone. (Also there aren’t a lot of staff as it is a small school so a small number equals a large proportion. I know the staff in question are still there.) Lisa’s comment about the houseparent gossiping and saying awful things like that reminded me of (I assume) the same houseparent sitting in the common room mocking an autistic student in her care in front of a handful of sixth-form girls. I can think of at least two other students who were let down in a similar way to Lisa and Natalie, when they were struggling and in most in need of support. I think that the school is great if you are lucky enough to go through it being healthy and happy, but if life is difficult then there is a real lack of support and it is sink or swim, and it is a very difficult place to be.

        • Sandie Leaver says:

I completely endorse your comments Natassa, the house parent in question lacks care and empathy. In addition she is supported by the small number of staff (including senior staff) you refer to. I removed my daughter from the school in 2006 following, what I considered, to be a complete failure in adequate pastoral care.

  15. Eric Brierley says:

I am a life-long jazz musician. As the parent of a musically gifted child, I thought I was doing my best in sending her to Chets. Now I wonder. She persuaded me to let her leave early. Please enter my name in your petition.

Scott Dickinson (RNCM 1989-93, Tutor, Chets and RNCM 2000-2002)

  22. lisa Hannigan says:

  23. I fully support this petition, we must do all we can to assist victim’s of sexual abuse to come forward, thereby giving offenders no place to hide.

  24. Jane Manning and Anthony Payne says:

    Dear Ian,

Please add our names to the petition: Jane Manning ( singer – RAM 1956-60) and Anthony Payne ( composer).

  25. Susanne Stanzeleit says:

Sorry to be so late; could you please add my name to the petition, too. And thank you for everything you have done so far.

  26. As a member of the teaching profession forthe whole of my career in music, I can only say that the damage done to pupils and to the institution of music teaching is immense, and it is therefore essential for both victims of abuse and those preparing for a career in music, to say nothing of safeguarding the reputation of all present music teachers, that an enquiry be held forthwith to clarify the situation.

  27. Ellen Marsden says:

If at all possible please do add my name. I was at Chets from 1978-1982. Thank you so much, Ian for all your hard work.

  28. ianpace says:

Dear All – thanks for the latest comments and signatures. Whilst I have already produced the PDF version of the blog which has been sent out to numerous people, I am going to keep a list of additional names, which I will add to the list here and start adding to future versions of the PDF.

I would like to urge as many people as possible to write to their local MP about this petition, with a copy (please e-mail me – ian@ianpace.com – for a copy of the PDF – I will also try and put it up on here). In case you do not know who is your MP, just enter your postcode here – http://findyourmp.parliament.uk/ and you should get all of their contact details. I will produce a basic template for the type of letter one might send, which can be used or modified as you wish. The more pressure placed on lots of MPs, the greater the chance of support for this inquiry – please do help in this way!

    Best,
    Ian

    • Carolyn Liefkes-Skinner says:

Please add my name to the petition too, as I only just found out about it.

  31. Joanna Chiang says:

Please add my name to your petition.

  32. Walter Brewster says:

If possible please add my name to the petition. I am presently CEO of a music co-operative called Strawberry Music. Formerly Deputy Head of Dorset Music Service. I studied at RCM from 1974-8. Like everyone else I am concerned that we root out the major issues coming to light here. I am also concerned that there is a system that will allow one to one teaching to continue. There are already many music services that see individual teaching as elitist and may use this crisis to divert policy to their own ends. We need to ensure that all teaching is safe for both student and teacher.

  33. Zoe Kitson says:

Please add my name to the petition. Student at Chetham’s 1993-1995.
    Thank you Ian.

  34. Matt Peacock says:

Please add my name to the petition. Thanks

  35. Mark Casey says:

I didn’t go to Chet’s, but I once fell profoundly in love with someone who did. As an adopted Mancunian, I am saddened at the damage caused to its reputation and appalled by the extent of damage caused to such young talented lives, of which we will never know the full extent. Peace and love to to all affected over the years and I hope you find healing for the wounds these essential revelations may inevitably re-open. Perhaps breaking down walls of silence and isolation.

Please add my name to the petition, unless it’s now closed. If so, please accept my comments.

    Mark Casey.TfGM.

  36. Alison Blunt says:

Please add my name to the petition, I’ve only just heard about it.

  37. Fiona Allinson says:

Please add my name to the petition too.

  38. katie heller says:

Please add my name to the petition too, i didn’t know about it

  39. Alice Leaver says:

Please add my name; Chethams former pupil – 2002 – 2006

  40. Sandie Leaver says:

Parent of former pupil ; please add my name

  41. Bill Davies says:

Please add my name to the petition. I was at Chets between 1983-1985.

    Bill Davies

  42. Owen Hubbard says:

I realise this is far, far too late, but I’ve been rather out of the loop with developments of late (other than occasionally scanning the news headlines) and would like to give my public support to this petition – or at least register my absolute agreement with what’s said within it, even if it’s too late to add my name officially.

    Owen Hubbard – Chetham’s 2005-2010, University of Oxford 2010-13

P.S. This seems even more pertinent (if that’s possible) in the light of the reports that have just been released regarding the current state of affairs at the school.
I won’t comment in detail on what I make of the findings within them – but I think it says something that I, as someone who’s very rarely afraid to speak my mind or to stand up to authority, and who has had nothing to do with Chets for nearly three years, have only now felt emboldened to comment on here under my own name after seeing that a couple of my contemporaries from my time there have already added their names, and after reports criticising aspects of the school have been produced by official bodies and published in national newspapers.

  43. Anne Loughran says:

Please add my name to the petition
    Anne Loughran (musician,teacher,parent)

  44. Anne Nicole says:

Please add my name to the petition, as a mother of a young gifted musician who spent a few months recently at YMS, was bullied and didn’t get the right support: OBVIOUS LACKS OF PASTORAL CARES, children’s health and wellness (especially the young ones) is definitely the last thing to invest in and to care for. My daughter came back broken and vulnerable, and meeting a sexual predator in those conditions … well, I just can’t imagine…

  45. Alexandra Morphet says:

I stumbled upon this by accident and want to endorse your continued efforts to rally support and make a difference. I was a victim of sexual abuse at Wells Cathedral School in the 1970s and got very little support when I was eventually brave enough to reveal to administrators what had occured.

  46. If it is possible, please do add my name….i,m sharing this, as the news has only just appeared on channel 4, and this link was below. Very moved to read this, tho not all, thoroughly, yet.. bravely done. it is vital that we change this for children now and in the future, and also create better support for abuse victims and survivors.

  47. Reblogged this on Join The Dots Campaign and commented:
Channel 4 news carried an exclusive last nights news. Please read & share this petition, comments below are a moving testimony too, and so many students of lots of schools, parents and others have come together on this……..http://www.channel4.com/news/sex-scandal-five-uk-music-schools-implicated-exclusive
