Petition for an Inquiry into Sexual and other Abuse at Specialist Music Schools – The List of Signatories

Petition re-opened until May 31st – please click here.

As of Sunday February 24th, 2013, the list below details signatories to the petition calling for an inquiry into sexual and other abuse at Chetham’s School of Music and other specialist music institutions. If you would like your name to be added to this, please either leave a message below or e-mail me at and I will include it. If you studied at any such institution, please give details and dates, and otherwise please say how you would like to be described. The petition has been published by The Guardian (see ), and I will after this weekend send it to a variety of politicians, heads of institutions, and so on.

In recent weeks, the ongoing allegations of historical sexual abuse at Chetham’s School of Music have put many aspects of music education under intense public scrutiny. Following the conviction of the former director of music, Michael Brewer, the tragic death of Frances Andrade, and extensive testimonies in the press of other abuse, it is clear that there should now be a full independent inquiry into the alleged sexual and psychological abuse by Chetham’s staff since the establishment of the institution as a music school in 1969. Such an inquiry would ideally extend to other institutions as well, some of which have also been the subject of allegations of abuse.

Recent press reports have suggested that during this time many students complained to senior members of staff about the sexually abusive behaviour of a number of Chetham’s teachers, but that no satisfactory action was taken. While it is of primary concern that those who stand accused should be investigated as soon as possible, if these allegations are shown to be correct it will be important to understand the wider implications of a school culture which facilitated such abuses of trust, and afforded alleged offenders long-term protection. For this reason, we ask senior members of staff from that time to account for what appears to be the severe failure of the school system to protect its pupils from those who exploited their positions of power. The prevalence of sexual abuse which appears to have continued unhindered over many years suggests an alarming lack of responsibility and competence in the management of a school which had, above all, a duty to protect the welfare of its students and to nurture the artistic potential of every pupil. That Chetham’s appears to have failed in this respect, and with such devastating consequences for the personal and professional lives of the alleged victims, now requires some considerable explanation from those who held senior positions of authority.

Greater Manchester Police are conducting an investigation into a variety of complaints of sexual abuse related to Chetham’s School of Music and a dedicated Operation called “Kiso” has been established to support this. As an organisation, we recognise that reporting sexual abuse, which occurred some time ago is an incredibly difficult thing to do and we will afford anyone who comes forward, all the appropriate support to discuss events in their own time. We would urge anyone who wishes to report abuse or with information, to contact Greater Manchester Police on 0161 856 6777 or via email, Alternatively, persons who wish to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 .

Petition for an inquiry into sexual and psychological abuse at Chetham’s School of Music and other specialist institutions

Petition re-opened until May 31st – please click here.

Below is the text of a petition drafted by Paul Lewis, Tim Horton and myself, calling for an inquiry into sexual and psychological abuse in Chetham’s and other specialist music institutions. To sign, please leave a message here or e-mail me at It will be sent to the Guardian after midday Tuesday afternoon with the signatures we have by then, and forwarded to politicians and others. We are already amassing a considerable number of signatures both from ex-Chet’s people, other musicians, and others, but hope to get as many as possible. If you were at Chet’s or another specialist music school, do let us know which years you were there. Also, please let us know in what form you would like your name to be listed.

Chris Ling’s views on sexing up classical music

I intend to write at length for this blog on Chetham’s, where I was a pupil from 1978 to 1986, and much to do with the fall-out from the conviction of Michael and Kay Brewer for sexual assault, the shocking revelations about Malcolm Layfield, Chris Ling and others brought to light through the pioneering journalistic work of Helen Pidd and Philippa Ibbotson, as soon as time permits. Many reading this will have already seen the absolutely harrowing articles about Chris Ling published in the Guardian, here, here and here – a story that has been at least part-known by many musicians for a long time, but which was successfully hushed up by Chetham’s at the time. Only now, more than 20 years later, are the women affected being acknowledged in terms of what they went through.

But Chris Ling is still able to carry on running an agency in Los Angeles with impunity. I wanted to post here a section from an article in the Omaha World Herald, published on August 22nd, 1999, thus seven years after Ling fled the UK as the sexual abuse allegations were first being investigated, which is even more sickening in light of what has now been made public. In the context of continuing attempts to ‘sex up’ classical music, the reality of what Ling was actually doing with his students should be considered whenever one encounters similar talk.

‘Hot, Sexy and Hip Classical Musicians Drop Necklines, Turn Heads, Win Applause’, by Kyle Macmillan

‘Just look (and who can resist?) at those sultry, sometimes scantily clad vixens who frequently grace television and print advertisements for beer, automobiles, apparel and classical music.

Wait a minute. Classical music?

Well, yes, as a matter of fact. A field that used to be associated with the staid and stodgy has gone hot and hip, as promoters and presenters put an increasing emphasis on youth and sex appeal.

Call it babes in music land. Call it sex and violins. Few trends have had a more visible or far-reaching impact on classical music in the 1990s, as Midlanders will soon discover when the 1999-2000 season gets under way.’

‘All are beautiful, and all capitalize on those looks in their publicity efforts. A little more than a year ago when Warner hired a new agent, CHL Artists Inc. of Beverly Hills, Calif., the firm immediately had sensual photographs shot of her.

“Wendy is a very pretty girl,” said Christopher Ling, CHL’s president, “and she’s a marvelous cellist. I don’t think it demeans her talent to have a picture of her that says she is a pretty girl. We’ve simply put photos out there which are new, which are good. And I hope it will attract a younger audience.”

Attracting new, young audiences has become an obsession in the classical-music world, which is facing alarming drops in ticket and compact-disc sales as the patrons on which it has long counted are growing old and dying.

To snare new buyers, many promoters, publicists and presenters are striving to combat what Ling calls the field’s “very staid, very boring image.” Traditionally, he said, it has not really tried to sell itself, settling for bland, rudimentary marketing and publicity efforts.

“If you looked,” Ling said, “at the CD covers of pop, it was very clever. It was always presented in a new way. And I believe the same thing should be said of classical music. And I’m very glad to say that over the last seven or eight years, that’s exactly what has happened.”‘
